How Bernardo Silva's Strike Gave Man City Their 1000th EPL Goal

Manchester City have become the sixth club to score 1000 home goals in the English Premier League (EPL). Having played for 26 seasons in the premiership, the Citizens scored 2 goals in their February 4 clash with Newcastle to reach the milestone. How did the Pep Guardiola side get this far?

City got their 1000th home goal in their 494th match in the competition. Phil Foden scored their 999th goal in the 15 minute during the clash with Newcastle. Substitute Bernardo Silva completed the landmark 5 minutes after the hour. Cumulatively, 160 of these thousand goals were scored in their former ground at Maine Road while 840 were recorded in their current home, Etihad Stadium. This makes it obvious that the new ground brings more fortune for the 2022/23 champions than the old. Within their period of stay in the EPL, the Citizens have won 298 games, drawn 98 and lost 105. They have also conceded 471 games at home in the process. This gives a goal difference of +529.

Interestingly, 356 of these goals were scored between the opening game 2016/17 and match day 26 of 2022/23. This coincides with the managerial period of Josep Guardiola i Sala (aka Pep Guardiola). The Manchester Blues have won 99 of their 127 games (so far) under the Spanish coach. They also lost 16 and drew 12 matches under him. The club also conceded 101 goals under the management of the gaffer. Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero is the player with most home goals for them.

The club in top of the home goals log is Manchester United. The Red Devils have scored 1238 EPL goals. Despite playing for 5 seasons more than their neighbours, the 20-time EPL winners have conceded fewer (436) goals in the competition than than the Citizens. Second-placed Arsenal have scored 1185 and conceded 503 goals in their 588 home appearances in the tournament. The other premiership outfits that have outscored City in the league are Liverpool (1183), Chelsea (1134) and Tottenham (1024). Silva's goal makes the Guardiola-coached club the second side to hit the millenium of goals in the 2022/23 season.

With the current pace, it won't be surprising if the club beat Tottenham to the 1100th home goal in the competition within the next few seasons.
