Few weeks ago, Thomas Tuchel stripped Ross Barkley of his number 8 shirt and handed it over to Mateo Kovacic. The German manager did not disrespect Barkley, he gave the English midfielder number 18 shirt and included him in the UCL squad.

Many things have changed about Kovacic since Tuchel gave him the number 8 shirt. The Croatian midfielder now makes wise decisions in the midfield unlike the old times.

Currently, Mateo Kovacic has scored a goal and 3 assists for Chelsea this season. This is already more than his total goal involvements last season.

Remember, history sometimes plays a role in the current football life. Frank Lampard is one of the best players to ever wear the number 8 jersey, he scored many goals and assists during his time too.

The question here remains, Is Lampard's number 8 shirt number the reason behind Mateo Kovacic's sudden improvement. I think the number 8 jersey is part of the reasons why Kovacic improved.

The signing of Saul Niguez also helped Kovacic to pick up because Tuchel never fail to feature any player who is in form.

Mateo Kovacic has good dribbling skills, he gradually comes to the opponent's 18-yard box unlike his old days where he dribbles without creating chances.

The combination of N'golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho against Tottenham really showed the full ability of Chelsea team.

These 3 midfielders collectively defend we, attack well and also mark well.

N'golo Kante scored a goal against Tottenham Hotspur after playing a deflected shot. That was Chelsea's second goal and it got assisted by Mateo Kovacic.

The number 8 jersey fit Mateo Kovacic so well and the fans will continue to love him if he continue with this pace.
