Why Lionel Messi May Surpass Cristiano Ronaldo In The All Time Goalscoring Chart

They have been quite a number of prolific goalscorers in the 21st century, but Messi and Ronaldo happens to be top on the list. Altogether, the Portugese and the Argentine International have registered a combined one thousand five hundred and fifty three (1553) goals in their careers which has earned them numerous golden boots. Specifically, Ronaldo has 798 official goals while Messi has 755, but there's every possiblity that the Argentine may overtake the Portugese in the coming years.

However, although Ronaldo has the advantage on the scoring chart, the fact that he is older than Messi gives room for the Argentine to catch up with him. This is because as an older player, the Manchester United talisman is likely to retire before Messi and with him no longer on the pitch, the 34 year old will have the chance to beat his record.

Perhaps Messi's presence is the one reason the 36 year old has been at the top of his game as he wants to stay ahead in the scoring chart. But since there's a big possiblity he could call time on his career before the Argentine due to his age superiority, his record is far from safe.

Statistics has shown that age is a major determinant in players longevity in the game and once they clock the average retirement age of 35, they begin to prepare for another career off the pitch. Ronaldo is already pushing himself to play beyond this age limit and there's every chance he will leave the game before Messi. When this happens, the likelihood of the Argentine surpassing him in the goalscoring chart will be increased.

Do you think Messi can overtake Ronaldo in the all time scoring chart?
