UEFA Champions League

Meet the last Arsenal first XI that played in the Champions League, where are they now?

Arsenal missed out on a European spot after finishing eighth in the previous Premier League season. That was the first time in twenty-five years Arsenal would fail to qualify for Europe.

Mikel Arteta's lad needed both Tottenham and Everton to drop point on the final day, but Spurs edged Leicester City by 4-2 to qualify for the European Conference League.

However, the Gunners fans have put the disappointment behind them and hope their club will return to the UEFA Champions League soon.

However, a three consecutive defeat (against Brentford, Chelsea, and Manchester City) at the start of the season dampen the hopes of the Gunners fans.

After the International break in September, the team bounced back with three straight wins and a draw.

Now the Gunners are tenth on the log, four points behind Manchester United, who occupy the final Champions League spot.

The last time Arsenal played in the Champions League was in the 2016/2017 season, and they were demolished by Bayern Munich 10-2 on aggregate.

As the team keep battling to return to the most prestigious club competition in the world, we take a look at the last Arsenal (XI) that played in the Champions League and where they are now.

Goalkeeper

David Ospina was in goal during the last Champions League game. He conceded five goals against the Bavarians.

Ospina left Arsenal in 2018 and joined Napoli on a loan deal. After impressing during the loan spell, the Italian side secured his service permanently.

Defenders

Shkodran Mustafi, Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal, and Hector Bellerin.

The German defender partnered Laurent Koscielny in defense, while Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin were deployed in left back and right back positions.

After a difficult time with Schalke 04, Mustafi joined Levante for the 2021/2022 season, while his partner Koscielny plays for Bordeaux.

Spanish defender Hector Bellerin left the Emirate and he's currently on loan at Real Betis, while Nacho Monreal is playing for Real Sociedad.

Midfielders

Xhaka, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Aaron Ramsey

Against Bayern Munich, Wenger started with a three-man midfield with the hope of overturning the first leg defeat to the Germans.

Of the three midfielders, Granit Xhaka is still the only player at the club. The duo of Chamberlain and Ramsey has joined Liverpool and Juventus.

Strikers

Theo Walcott, Olivier Giroud, and Alexis Sanchez.

Wenger trusted the trio of Walcott, Giroud, and Sanchez in his final Champions League game as Arsenal manager.

None of the three forward players are still playing at the Emirate Stadium. Theo Walcott has returned to boyhood club Southampton, Giroud has moved to AC Milan, while Sanchez is with Inter Milan.
