The Super Eagles are struggling to win games. The team may not win a competition. The manager doesn't have the tactical know how. He doesn't develop players for the national team. The list is endless and never stops when it concerns the interest of Nigerians on the question of football.
Everyone is a coach and has the prerequisite to lead the Federation and the football team into a better place.
But is that true? Does the manager err in these areas?
When Gernot Rohr took charge of the national team, the team was in turmoil. Three previous coaches had failed to qualify Nigeria for the previous Cup of Nations in 2015 and 2017 after winning the 2013 edition. Confrontations between players and coaches also ensued. Coaches and the Federation had their day in the sum with one posting a video online.
Rohr took charge and has qualified the team for 2 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2022) and a FIFA World Cup in 2018. The coach has given the team a sense of strength to aspire through the qualifying series. As many say it is a sure banker that the team will advance to the main event with a game, or now two games to spare.
Then comes the storm which is not crumbling on the big stage. Failures at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and a last gasp Riyadh Mahrez free kick knocked the Eagles out of 2019 AFCON.
So what good is Rohr to the team?
Rohr has stabled the ship and introduced new faces to the national team. A team tagged the youngest to the last World Cup. Exciting names like Sam Chukwueze, Zaid Sanusi, Victor Osimhen have lite the stage with promising performances.
The tactician has also balanced the question of the players striking over unpaid match bonuses as the last story happened in 2014 in Brazil.
The question of options in the team has also improved as each position boast of 2 or 3 selections. But this option lacks players from the domestic league as a back and forth goes on.
On style the German has confused fans as many are yet to phantom the system he uses to record the wins under his belt for the national team. Too prosaic, not enough flair and dynamism. In transition the team is boring and fixated on root 1. The list is endless for fans. But the administrators have their mind glued at the new unknown blend on show.
Generally there seems to be more questions than answers, but there is a sense of intrigue going into 2022, that it could be a defining moment for the team, but if they fail to challenge favourably for AFCON or reach the latter stages of the FIFA World Cup. A harsh decision may be needed to steer the ship some place else.
The manager doesn't help the confidence mood of the fans. Always downplaying the strength of the team. Or keeping the Eagles as outsiders a mind game tactics that has backfired many times. The coach has to start seeing the world with bigger lenses and boast to terrify opponents.
Luckily, the current president of the NFF Amaju Pinnick says no third term for him. So that could propagate a new course for the new man in charge. Hopefully a coach that fulfills all the requirements of the national team.
But at the moment Rohr is all the Super Eagles have and results are not bad just the trophy the fans crave. However the road to the top is far, it takes one step at a time to hit the mountain top.
