61st independence: 3 great things Nigeria achieved in sport in the past one year

October 1, 2021 marks Nigeria's 61st Independence anniversary. The country gained freedom from Britain in 1960 after many years of colonisation.

Nigeria participated in many sports both on the continent and globally in the past one year with some few achievements.

Though Nigeria could have done better especially at the Tokyo Olympics in Japan, the little achievements are worth talking about as we hope to do better in the next one year.

Here are three great things sports achieved for Nigeria.

1. D'Tigress won Afrobasket Championship again: Nigeria's senior women national team, D'Tigress won their third consecutive Afrobasket trophy in Cameroon in September.

The Nigerian team beat Mali 70-59 to be crowned champions of the 2021 edition in Yaounde, Cameroon. They won the previous editions in 2017 and 2019.

They won the first quarter 22-11 but the Malians bounced back to take the second quarter 13-9 to make it a tight contest at half-time.

In the third quarter, it was the D’Tigress show. Captain Fantastic, Adaora Elonu, Victoria Macaulay and Ezinne Kalu worked so well with the team and they won 28-14. In the 4th quarter, coach Otis Hughley’s team sustained the momentum and with four minutes remaining, they will enjoy a 20-point lead over their opponents.

2. 10 medals at Tokyo Paralympics: After a disappointing performance at the Olympics, Nigeria won 10 medals at the Paralympics.

Nigeria finish with four gold, one silver, and five bronze medals.

With the 10 medals won, Nigeria occupies the 31st position behind two African countries Tunisia and Algeria who also have four gold like Nigeria but have more silver and bronze medals.

3. Super Eagles book AFCON ticket: In March, Nigeria's Super Eagles qualified for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be hosted by Cameroon after Lesotho and Sierra Leone played out a 0-0 draw.

At the time, the Super Eagles have eight points from four games, the Republic of Benin have seven points while the Leone Stars and the Crocodiles have four and three points, respectively, from five games.
