UEFA Champions League

Opinion: How Thomas Tuchel is banishing 2012/2013 season curse for Chelsea.

Over the years, football has shown us that there is a possibility that an event that took place years back can repeat itself again. In case of Chelsea football club, they have had a perfect repeat of what happened to them in year 2012 this year. The record that got to repeat itself again saw the blues won the UEFA Champions League for the second time in their history this year in May.

While Chelsea has had a repeat of year 2012 positively this year, they have been doing all they could to banish the curse that follows their first UCL triumph, having had an impressive start to the new season. In year 2012, Chelsea appointed Roberto Di Matteo midway through the season, and he led them to UCL glory, months after that success, he was shown the exit door after a poor run of form. While many had suggested that Thomas Tuchel could suffer the same fate, the German manager has successfully overseen a great rebuilding process that means his side will be very hard to stop.

Generally, it is known that the road to success is arguably easier than being able to sustain the success when it is achieved. One thing that most clubs of the World have been struggling to do is to put together a team that can compete for honors for a very long time. Under Di Matteo, Chelsea were able to defy all odds to claim the European title, but despite making a couple of decent signings that summer, the blues were unable to build on that success and crashed out of the following season's UCL at the group stage.

While other coaches would go into the transfer market to strengthen their squad, Thomas Tuchel has decided to look within first for solutions before making a couple of decent signing. In fact, the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Marcos Alonso and Even Jorginho had been tipped to secure a move away from the club, but the German manager has successfully improved them and make them key members of his squad. One thing that would've been a disaster for Chelsea if they made a wholesale change to their playing squad.

While it is so early to predict what will happen with Chelsea this season, their performances so far have suggested that they are set to do well than in 2012/2013 season and that is as a result of the incredible work put in place by Thomas Tuchel who firstly improved the player at his disposal before making a couple of decent signings.
