Manchester United possess a strong squad to challenge on multiple fronts this season.
Manchester United remain unbeaten in the league after five games played, but, have suffered defeat both in the Champions League and the Carabao Cup at the hands of Young Boys and West Ham respectively.
Out of the four competitions the Red Devils wanted to challenge for, they have been knocked out in the Carabao Cup by West Ham on Wednesday evening.
There is a player in the United squad that Ole likes to use in every game, but, the player is so poor in possession, and prone to making mistakes.
In the only game, he did not feature in this season, Manchester United won convincingly. A 4-1 victory over Newcastle United.
The player's name is Fred.
If any Manchester United fan is being asked about the Brazilian, he will have something to say.
Most times Fred is the catalyst for United's defensive errors.
He is generally known and used as a defensive midfielder, but he makes too many errors that do put his defenders under pressure.
- As a defensive midfielder, your first duty is to nullify the opponent's attacking threats before they get to your backline, but, Fred is the opposite. He doesn't do anything in that aspect compared to other elite clubs' defensive midfielders. No wonder United have kept just one clean sheet in seven games in all competitions.
- His interceptions are poor.
- A defensive midfielder must have the characteristic to connect defense to attack, but Fred doesn't do that. Most times when given the ball, he loses possessions.
Matic, though slow in possession, is a better option to Fred. He has the attributes of a defensive midfielder.
When the Serbian was brought in against West Ham to replace Fred, in United's last Premier League game, he showed United what Fred lacks as a DM. He also provided the assist for United's winner.
If Ole wants to become a strong title favourite, he should consider leaving Fred out of his XI, and trust Matic to fill the role.
