Football fans are still reacting to the names on the 30-man shortlist for Ballon d'Or 2021. Although this list will eventually be trimmed down, players whose names are on the list are those adjudged to have had a brilliant performance throughout the year.
There are some players who we know would not win the award, but due to their performances, it is only right to acknowledge their efforts by giving them a notable mention.
Chelsea's and Senegal goalkeeper Eduoard Mendy had the best year of his career last season by winning the UEFA Champions League. In his debut season, he also won the UCL Golden Glove and finished as runner up in the EPL. Despite this, and also being named best goalkeeper in Europe, Mendy was omitted from the Ballon d'Or nominees.
A lot of his teammates and fans have questioned why he was left out because Mendy was arguably the best in Europe, even better than the only goalkeeper on the list - Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Last night he pulled out six big saves for Chelsea against Brentford, reminding everyone that truly he is one of the best and deserved a mention.
Another African star who was overlooked by the organizers is Nigerian and Barcelona Women star Asisat Oshoala in the Women's category.
Oshoala was prolific in front of goal for Barcelona as they became the first female club to win a treble. She also made history by becoming the first African to win the UEFA Women's Champions League, yet she didn't make the shortlist.
She has been consistent over the years for and country but has never been drafted into the list even though she is a 4-time African Female Footballer of the Year Winner.
These two players deserved a notable mention on the Ballon d'Or list but were outrightly overlooked. It is high time African footballers begin to get the credit they deserve just like their European counterparts
