In what has been an exciting tournament so far, the Champions league group stage is almost nearing its conclusion as teams continue to battle for a place in the round of 16. Cristiano Ronaldo struck late to earn Manchester United a 2-2 draw against Atalanta on Tuesday, while Ansu Fati's 70th minute strike was enough to hand Barcelona a crucial three points to keep their qualification hopes alive. Real Madrid, Liverpool, City and Chelsea all won their games, while a late penalty from RB Leipzig ensured a share of the points against PSG.
Following the results of matchday 4, check out some significant things that you need to know;
1- Teams Qualified For The Next Round
As it stands, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Juventus and Ajax are through to the round of 16 after they all managed to maintain a perfect record so far with 4 wins out of 4. But of the four qualified teams, only Liverpool are group winners as it is not mathematically possible for any team to finish above them with just two games remaining.
2- Eliminated Teams
Malmo (0 Point), RB Leipzig (1 Point), and Besiktas (0 Point) cannot mathematically finish in either first or second place in their respective groups and are therefore the first three teams to be eliminated from the competition.
3- Real Madrid's Record
Following their 2-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk, Los Blancos are now the first team to score at least 1000 goals in the Champions league. The goals were both registered by Karim Benzema who is now the fourth all time top scorer in Real Madrid with 292 strikes to his name.
12 more clubs will be hoping to follow the 4 already qualified teams to the next round in the coming weeks, while 8 will have to continue their European campaign in the Europa League with another 8 going home. The Champions league will return again for matchday 5 on the 23rd and 24th of this month.
