Where Are the Last Manchester United Line-up to Win at Anfield?

The last time Manchester United won at Anfield in the Premier League was seven years ago when Wayne Rooney's late goal gave them all three points. Players like Morgan Schneiderlin, Marouane Fellaini and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson all played a part in that game.

Since then, the Red Devils have found it difficult to get a result away to Liverpool. The Manchester club has lost four of seven games at Anfield, scoring once and conceding 11 goals.

Both teams meet again at the same venue on Sunday, with United now a much more formidable side than the one managed by Louis van Gaal when they last won in 2016.

David De Gea and Anthony Martial are the only surviving players from the starting 11 that day. Below is the starting line-up for Manchester United the last time they won at Anfield;

GK – David De Gea

The Spanish goalkeeper was in goal at Anfield that day, and he produced one of his best displays against them, making four saves. Now in his 12th season with the Red Devils, De Gea will be making his 525th appearance for the club when he faces Liverpool on Sunday.

RB – Ashley Young

The Englishman, primarily a winger, played the right-back role at Anfield that day. Now 37 years, Ashley Young currently plays for Aston Villa.

RCB – Chris Smalling

Smalling was Louis van Gaal's first-choice center-back that season, starting 35 out of 38 league games. The Englishman was on the pitch that day when United beat Liverpool at Anfield, and he put in an excellent defensive performance. The defender now plays for AS Roma in Serie A.

LCB – Daley Blind

Daley Blind was one of Louis van Gaal's first signings as Manchester United manager. He was in the starting line-up for the Red Devils that day and also impressed in a defensive partnership with Smalling. The Dutchman is currently on loan at Bayern Munich after leaving Ajax in January.

LB – Matteo Darmian

Naturally a right back, Matteo Darmain played as a left back at Anfield that day. The Italian international now plays for Inter Milan in the Serie A after leaving Manchester United in 2019.

CM – Morgan Schneiderlin

The Frenchman was a regular under Louis van Gaal during the 2015/16 season and was also in the starting line-up at Anfield. He left Manchester United in 2017 and now plays for the Australian club Western Sydney Wanderers.

CM – Marouane Fellaini

The Belgian started the game at Anfield that day and produced one of his best performances in a United shirt. He was also directly involved in the goal after his header crashed off the crossbar and into Rooney's path. Fellaini currently plays for the Chinese Super League club, Shandong Taishan..

RW – Jesse Lingard

The Englishman enjoyed a breakthrough season under Louis van Gaal and was a part of the starting line-up that beat Liverpool at Anfield that day. Lingard currently plays for the newly-promoted side, Nottingham Forest.

AM – Ander Herrera

The Spaniard played as an attacking midfielder at Anfield when the home team lost 0-1 to United. He left the club in 2019 and now plays for Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.

LW – Anthony Martial

The Frenchman scored against Liverpool at Old Trafford earlier that season and was also in the starting line-up at Anfield when United 1-0. Anthon Martial is still at United and has scored six goals in 13 appearances under new manager Erik ten Hag this season.

ST – Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney was the captain at Anfield that day, and his goal secured all three points for United. He left the club in 2017 and is currently the manager of the MLS side, DC United, in the United States..
