Manchester United and Chelsea started their campaign on a high flier with the Red Devils thrashing Leeds United by 5-1 while the Blues defeated Crystal Palace by 3-0.
Both teams later added new players to their respective squads during the transfer window in a bid to strengthen the team ahead of the European competitions. Chelsea captured Romelu Lukaku for a reported fee of £97.5m on a five-year deal.
Manchester United also had their legend (Cristiano Ronaldo) return back to Old Trafford on a two-year deal with an option to extend by another year. Both players have been terrific for their clubs scoring a total of nine(9) goals between themselves.
However, along the line, their respective clubs started having some run of poor results accompanied by an exit from a domestic cup which further raised eyebrows amongst the fans.
This run of poor results can be channeled to one aspect of their game which they have failed to improve on just like the other teams such as Liverpool and Manchester City. Liverpool and Manchester City have been strong contenders for the EPL title for more than three years now due to their ability to score goals.
To win games, you have to score goals, and to score goals you have to master the art. The scoring of goals is not entirely a striker's responsibility but that of the whole team. During Manchester City or Liverpool's game, you could see Sadio Mane, Firminho, Sterling, Rodrigo, Jota or Salah, etc scoring goals on different days.
This system of operation makes it very difficult for teams to defeat them. Pep Guardiola has also deployed these tactics right from his time at Barcelona which is the reason behind why he operates with a false nine in his games.
These tactics have yielded positive results for both teams unlike for Chelsea and Manchester United who rely on Lukaku and Ronaldo to salvage points for them. Manchester United has won three games, drawn once, and lost thrice since Cristiano joined the club.
Out of those three losses, Cristiano has scored once, which came against Young Boys and they could have won the match if not for the red card issued to Wan Bissaka. This shows that without his goals, the team would crumble just like they did yesterday against Everton.
Chelsea on the other hand lost two games in a row against Manchester City and Juventus with Lukaku failing to score in those games. The only game Chelsea drew which was against Liverpool also saw Lukaku fire blank.
Therefore if Chelsea and Manchester United wish to win trophies they must work on how they can improve the team such that any player can score which will also take the pressure off Lukaku and Ronaldo.
