Erling Haaland scored his sixth hat trick of the season when Manchester City clashed with Burnley in the quarter final of 2022/23 English FA Cup. This brought his goal haul this term 42. This makes him the first player to score more than forty goals in his debut season in England.
For context, only six English Premier League (EPL) player have ever scored more than forty goals (in all competitions) in a season. His tally this so far has brought him level with Cristiano Ronaldo whose best record for Manchester United came in the 2007/08 season. Haaland marked his England debut with a brace as he scored one goal on either side of half time in the 2-0 win at West Ham. The Leeds-born forward made his first EPL record when he netted two consecutive hat tricks on match days 4 and 5. Interestingly, his second triple was a perfect one as he scored with his left foot, head and right foot respectively.
In the Champions League, the Norwegian striker netted another brace in his first game for the Citizens as he inspired a 4-0 away win over Sevilla. When he appeared for his first EFL match, the former Borussia Dortmund goal poacher was also on target getting a tenth minute opening goal. Interestingly, the only tournament in which he did not score on debut for Manchester City is the FA Cup as he was shut out by Arsenal in the fourth round. However, Haaland returned with a hat trick in when the Citizens hosted Burnley in the quarter finals.
The 2019 U-20 World Cup golden boot winner is now the leading goal scorer goal scorer in the UCl (10 goals) and EPL (28 goals). With his three goals in the FA Cup, he has become the joint highest goal scorer from a premiership club in the competition. Only two players have now scored more goals for an EPL goal in a season than the Norwegian. These stars are Ruud van Nistelrooy (Manchestee United) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) who scored 44 goals in 2002/03 and 17/18 respectively. The other two post forty-goals players (41 goals) are Andy Cole (1993/94) and Harry Kane (2017/18).
If Haaland continues at this pace he may beat the whole record before the end of this season.
