CAR 0-2 Nigeria: Two Super Eagles players who broke records

The Super Eagles' 2-0 victory over Central African Republic is not only sweet for the whole team, it is also historical for some players.

Nigeria made sure to avenge a shock late minute 1-0 loss three days earlier at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

Defender Leon Balogun opened the scoring at the half hour mark to put Nigeria ahead at the Stade Japoma de Douala on Sunday afternoon.

Victor Osimhen, who misfired in the first leg, increased the Super Eagles' tally to two just before half time to give Nigeria a comfortable lead into the second half.

Nigeria held on to their lead all through the second half and claimed maximum points which confirmed their firm position at the top of the table with nine points from four matches.

While the victory was a sweet revenge for the whole team and country, here are two Super Eagles players who broke personal records on Sunday in Douala.

1. Ahmed Musa: The 28 years old finally made his 100th international appearance for Nigeria.

Musa's 100th appearance celebration was delayed by two games after FIFA clarified that it nullified two of the matches that supposed to have counted for him.

Musa’s appearances in the 3-0 defeat of Togo in a friendly match in Paris in June 2017 and the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 qualifier against Algeria in Constantine in November 2017 did not count.

The match against Togo was struck off as both Nigeria and Togo made more than the regular number of changes in the game, while the encounter in Constantine, which ended 1-1, was deleted because Nigeria fielded an ineligible player and the result was overturned, with Algeria awarded the game, even as Nigeria had already picked the World Cup ticket before the tie.

But the former Leicester City striker finally broke the record by joining Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama as the only three players who have reached that feat.

2. Leon Balogun: Though he used to score for his club sides, defender Leon Balogun has never scored an international goal until last Sunday.

But he broke the deadlock and smashed the net in the 29th minute to record his first goal for the Super Eagles and put Nigeria on the road to a 2-0 victory.

That game will be his 40th appearance for the Super Eagles since joining the team in 2014.

Balogun has scored 10 goals in total for four different clubs over his playing career. Four of those was scored when he played for Turkiyemspor Berlin between 2007 and 2008.

He scored another four goals for Darmstadt 98 in his 21 appearances for the side during the 2014/2015 season, before scoring one goal each for Mainz and Brighton.
