If Chelsea were to dismiss Graham Potter, they have the option to immediately hire a top-notch manager. According to reports, Luis Enrique is eager to return to coaching.
Enrique, who previously managed Barcelona, has been without a job since December following his resignation as Spain’s manager following a lackluster performance at the World Cup in Qatar.
He has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Potter if he were to be dismissed due to the mounting pressure on him as a result of the team’s poor performance.
Chelsea has struggled in 2023 with only one victory in 11 matches, and the team is currently in 10th place in the Premier League table. Despite spending more than £600 million on new players in the two transfer windows since he took over, owner Todd Boehly has yet to see the desired results.
Despite the support given to Potter by Chelsea, their poor performances on the field have not improved, and it is crucial for results to improve soon. In the event that Potter is dismissed, Enrique could be a quick solution.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Enrique is eager to return to club management and has not yet been in talks with any teams. Romano notes in his column for CaughtOffside that Enrique does not want to take a long break after leaving his position with the Spanish national team. Enrique last coached a club team when he left Barcelona in the summer of 2017, and he served as Spain’s coach for four years from 2018 to 2022.
In 2015, he led Barcelona to victory in the Champions League, and during his tenure there, the team also won two La Liga titles and three Copa del Reys. Prior to coaching Barcelona, Enrique managed Celta Vigo in Spain and spent a season with Roma in 2011/12.
This Saturday, Chelsea will aim to improve their fortunes as they face Leeds in the Premier League. They will then try to overcome a 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their Champions League last-16 match against Borussia Dortmund next Wednesday.
Winning the Champions League is Chelsea’s only chance to claim a trophy this season, and it is also their most probable path to qualifying for next season’s tournament.
After suffering a defeat to London rivals, Tottenham, on Sunday, Potter’s team is now 14 points behind them in fourth place. To add to Potter’s troubles, it was recently announced that defender Thiago Silva will be out for approximately six weeks due to a knee injury.
