How Ben Chilwell’s Injury Could Help Saul Niguez.

Chelsea swept aside Juventus yesterday at Stamford Bridge, but they suffered some injury blows. Ben Chilwell and N’golo Kante couldn’t complete the match as they sustained knocks.

Ben Chilwell’s injury looked very serious as he hobbled off the pitch in the 71st minute.

There have been no confirmation of how long Chilwell will be out for, but there are rumors that Chilwell will be out for a some months and that could help save Saul Niguez’s Chelsea career.

Chelsea signed Saul Niguez from Athletico Madrid in the summer and since then, he has had a very tough time breaking into the Chelsea team. Saul is competing with the likes of N’golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. It is very competitive there, but Chilwell’s injury can give him a chance to play in another position for Chelsea.

Saul can play as a wing-back. The Spanish midfielder has been used as a wing-back at Athletico Madrid by Diego Simeone. Saul’s left foot will help him in filling Ben Chilwell’s role perfectly. Marcos Alonso will be Chelsea first choice left wing-back now that Chilwell is injured, but if Alonso is not in good form or isn’t performing well, Saul can easily slot in.

That will give him more opportunities to play more for Chelsea. There have been talks that Saul could leave Chelsea in January due to lack of playing time, but Chilwell’s injury will provide an opportunity for him to enjoy more game time in a very competitive Chelsea team.

Saul also will be well suited to Ben Chilwell’s role, because of how Thomas Tuchel uses his wing-backs. Tuchel has previously said that in his system, his wing-backs play like midfielders, so that will definitely help Saul.
