What Caused The Rise Of Manchester City Over Manchester United?

There are many reasons why Manchester United experienced a downfall after winning their last title in 2013, and why Manchester City continued to make progress, and also winning titles. But one has to focus on one big factor, Which is that Manchester City have made smart signings in the transfer market, while United have failed to make good signings in the past 6 years.

The 2012–2013 Manchester United squad was clearly old. The likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes retired after that season, and Ferdinand, Vidic, and Evra were no longer good as they used to be. However, instead of rebuilding, Manchester United decided to continue using the players they had, trying to use out the last bits of Robin van Persie, Rooney, and more. Also, the continuous changing of managers did not help the rebuild process either, with each manager having their own methods, preferred players, and bad transfers.

The likes of Memphis Depay, Romelu Lukaku did not turn out the way Manchester United wanted them, and even Paul Pogba have not turned out like the way the United board expected. The only expensive transfer United have gotten right in the past 8 years is the Bruno transfer, which has paid off. Manchester United are in a good direction under Ole, but before that, it was just pure inconsistency and terrible decisions.

And while Manchester United continuously failed in the transfer market, Manchester City made smart decisions like buying Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne. There are people who will say that Manchester City’s budget and spending ability is not fair, but we also have to keep in mind that Manchester United are also one of the richest clubs in the world, the wrong side of them is that they have spent their millions on the wrong players.
