Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi was once again on target in Nottingham Forest 1-0 win over second place Arsenal at the City ground on Saturday evening. His goal has secured the Premier League status of Forest for next season, and confirms Manchester City as Premier League champions for the third successive season.
The goal was the Nigerians fifth in three games, fresh off his brace away at Stamford Bridge in their 2-2 draw against Chelsea. The Super Eagles striker has now scored nine goals in the Premier League this season.
The Gunners had more possession of the ball, but it was Forest who would take their chances and break the deadlock in the 19th minute.
Awoniyi received a heavy pass from Morgan Gibbs-White, which then saw Gabriel Magalhaes’s subsequent clearance rebound off the shin of the Forest striker and past Aaron Ramsdale in goal.
Forest came close to doubling their advantage two minutes into the second half when Felipe came close to doubling for his team, but his attempt deflected off Gabriel before Ramsdale parried away for a corner.
Awoniyi was later substituted in the 79th minute for winger Brennan Johnson.
The victory by Forest leaves them on 37 points and safe of relegation from the Premiership.
