He was bought in 2019 winter transfer window by Barcelona in hopes of coming in to fill in the defensive issues Barca have been suffering for some time, in the hopes of succeeding Gerard Pique. Plans of succeeding Pique seems to not have panned out as the player has been langushing in the shadows. He was loaned out to FC Shalke 04 last season to improve on his play and gain minutes, but is yet to make the cut for first team.
His loan to OGC Nice spans 6 months and includes an option to buy for €8 million in addition of €7 million in add-ons.
He was loaned out to SL Benfica in 2020 summer. The move turned out to be a failure as he was consistently benched by Nicolas Otamendi and Jan Vertoghen. The deal fell through and he was eventually called back by Barcelona and has completed the move to French club OGC Nice.
Fellow teammates and academy players have since broken into the team in the form of Oscar Mingueza and Ronald Araujo who have taken his place in the team. There is also the likes of Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti to contend with. Also coming this summer is Manchester City's Eric Garcia, whom Barcelona hopes to successfully succeed Pique.
