I'll simply start this article with the fact that the only goal Chelsea have conceded this season came from a penalty when Reece James handled the ball during the game against Liverpool. During that period, Thomas Tuchel's men have faced Arsenal, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace and they have won all those games quite convincingly. This should be a base of what we are about to cover, and why Chelsea might be the best defensive team in the world.
In the league, they have kept 4 clean sheets out of a possible 5, conceding just 0.2 goals per game which is very impressive. In terms of individual defensive ability, they are very well organised. They make 17.6 tackles per game with 12.8 interceptions and 24.8 clearances. Their goalkeepers are also usually quite busy as they make 3.6 saves on average.
They have made 1 error which led to a shot and conceded just 1 penalty as stated earlier. Things get more interesting when you look at their individual duels. They win just about 50% of their total duels per game, 50% of their ground duels and 50% of their aerial duels. This means that their defensive organisation is only at a high quality consistently during a game.
They have only had one red card so far and give out just about 8 fouls on average. Overall, it has been a great start to the season for Chelsea. They look like a team that cannot be beaten. While they are yet to play Manchester United and Manchester City, there is a growing confidence in and around the fan base that they are capable of beating anyone. If they beat any of the two Manchester clubs, they are very likely to have a free run at the title and it would all be thanks to Tuchel's defensive system that allows even the least experienced players to thrive.
