I think more Nigerians have played in the Premier League more than any other of Europe's top 5 leagues. The likes of Finidi George, Obafemi Martins, Efan Ekoku, Shola Ameobi, John Obi Mikel, Kanu Nwankwo, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Celestine Babayaro, Alex Iwobi, and so many others have all played in the Premier League. And although they were all quality players, none of them managed to win the Premier League Player of the Month award.
In fact, only four Nigerian footballers in history have had the honour of winning it. This doesn't mean that those who didn't win were not good enough, not at all. In fact, Premier League greats like Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and Kevin de Bruyne have not won the award. That's to tell you how tough the competition is.
Jay Jay Okocha was the first Nigerian footballer to win it while playing for Bolton Wanderers. And after him, three others have followed in his footsteps. Here are four Nigerian players to have won the Premier League Player of the Month award.
1. Austin Okocha (Bolton)
2. Osaze Odemwingie (West Bromwich Albion)
3. Odion Ighalo (Watford)
4. Kelechi Iheanacho
Kudos to them. Hopefully, we will see more Nigerians in the list in years to come. And also, we hope to see a Nigerian footballer win, not just the Premier League Player of the Month award, but also the Premier League Player of the Season award.
