EPL: Why Chelsea might drop out from the top 10 this weekend

Following back to back home wins against Leeds United and Borrusia Dortmund, Chelsea will be looking to keep going in the right direction when they travel to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester City this afternoon. The match which is scheduled to kick-off by 16:00 West Africa Standard time will mark the 34th meeting between these two sides in the top flight since 1992.

It goes without saying that, Graham Potter’s time as Chelsea manager has been blighted with injuries to key stars as he looks to alleviate any pressure placed on him. Just as it looked like the worst was behind the head coach, the club have been hit with a fresh batch of fitness concerns for this afternoon’s clash with Leicester City. Reece James, who has faced numerous spells on the sideline this season, has been confirmed to be out with illness, while Raheem Sterling who scored against Borrusia Dortmund is a doubt due to a tight hamstring. Both played a key part in Chelsea’s midweek Champions League win against Dortmund and without their respective issues Potter may have opted to stick with the same line-up.

With these aforementioned injuries and more, Potter now faces a number of crucial selection dilemmas that could upset the balance of his team. For context, their opponent Leicester City are 15th on the table, two points outside the relegation zone, and that is to say they're fighting for survival which makes every point very valuable. Recall that the Blues have struggled to beat teams below them who are battling to avoid the drop especially since the turn of the year. They lost at home to Southampton, drew at West Ham, not to mention how they laboured to a slender 1-0 win against Leeds United in their last Premier league game. Chelsea who are 10th on the table, leveled on points (34) with 11th place side Aston Villa are still far from convincing despite wins in their last two games, and coming up a relegation threatened Leicester City team, it's likely they might not pick up all three points on the road.

Should they drop points today and Villa win at West Ham United tomorrow, then the Blues will drop out of the top ten this weekend.
