After yesterday's 1 - 1 draw with Southampton, it became more evident that Manchester United are in dire need of a quality defensive midfielder. Fred is trying at defensive midfield, but the only problem is that he runs around the middle of the field too much and is not defensive minded.
Nemanja Matic is also trying but he became lost in the middle of the field against Southampton. The transfer window is almost shut and Manchester United can still sign a new defensive midfielder, but it won't be that easy.
In my opinion, Manchester United should deploy Victor Lindelof as a defensive midfielder, while inserting Raphael Varane as a replacement in centre-back. This is because even though Lindelof is a natural centre-back, I do see features of a defensive midfielder in him sometimes, when he runs into the middle of the field to make crucial match saving tackles.
Fabinho has been both as a centre-back and a defensive midfielder at Liverpool while Fernandinho has also been used at similar roles at Manchester City. This shows that if given a trial, Lindelof will excel as a defensive midfielder.
