How Anelka's goal prevented Chelsea from doing Arsenal's 'Invincible' season in 2004

Many fans may not know this, but Chelsea FC of England nearly went a entire Premier League Season without suffering a Premier League defeat. This happened during the 2004/2005 season, just one year after Arsenal did the famous 'Invincible' season. Chelsea suffered just one defeat throughout the season thanks to a penalty scored by Nicolas Anelka that saw the Blues surrender to a slender loss to Manchester City on match day nine.

Chelsea travelled to the home of Manchester City after winning 4 of its opening eight matches. Going into the game, Chelsea was criticized for its negative approach to football. This was because the club had won games by one-nil triumphs. During the match, Paulo Ferraira, in an attempt clear a long ball brought down Nicolas Anelka to give away the cheap penalty.

Anelka duly converted to give Manchester City the lead. Chelsea tried to get back into the game, but failed due to Manchester City's resolute defending. The club tasted its first and only defeat of the season on the night.

Chelsea would go on to play 29 more matches in the EPL that season without losing a single game. Chelsea finished the season with 95 points earned. The feat was made possible by Jose Mourinho, who was Chelsea's coach at the time. It was his first season as a Premier League coach. The Blues signed him after he led FC Porto to Champions League triumph the previous season.

Chelsea conceded just 15 goals all season thanks to a very solid defensive partnership between Petr Cech, John Terry and Richardo Carvalho. Claudio Makelele and Michael Essien were usually deployed as defensive midfielders during that season. Chelsea finished the season with 29 wins, 8 draws and one defeat. With 95 points, Chelsea beat Arsenal to the title by 12 points.

It was unfortunate that the club could not do what Arsenal had done just a season earlier. The Gunners famously went an entire season without tasting defeat in the Premier League. Managed by one of the best managers Arsene Wenger, Arsenal won 26 matches and drew 12 games in the 38-match season. Thierry Henry finished as top scorer with 30 league goals.

Unsurprisingly, the club won the Premier League trophy that season. The club won 90 points and finished 11 points above Chelsea, who finished in second place. The Arsenal football team was awarded a golden Premier League trophy in recognition of its magnificent accomplishment. The Arsenal team of the 2003/2004 season was also dubbed 'The Invincible' team.

Nicolas Anelka would later move to Chelsea in 2008. He famously missed the final penalty of the shootout of the UCL final between Chelsea and Manchester United in 2008. That miss saw Chelsea miss out on an opportunity to win its first UCL trophy at the time.
