Ole Gunner Solskjaer has gone into his fourth season as a Manchester United manager without winning a single trophy with the club since his appointment, and he was awarded a new extended contract that will keep him at the club for more than three years in the summer given he has shown some encouraging signs and performances in his 3 seasons at Old Trafford including leading them to the Europa League final and also finishing 2nd on the league table last season.
However, after awarding him an extended contract in the summer, Manchester United would be expecting him to help them win their first trophy in over 4 years this season, and the Carabao Cup was one of the trophies he had a big chance of winning this season given the competition is a bit less competitive when compared to every other competition he will be participating this season including the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League.
Nonetheless, he has started this season's Premier League campaign convincingly as he has won 4 of his first 5 matches with the remaining one finishing in a 1-1 draw against Southampton last month, but judging from his team's performances in some of their games so far this season despite not yet playing against any top 4 teams, one can easily say that United might not mount a strong league title challenge this season.
And given they have lost their opening game of this season's Champions League campaign against Young Boys, one could also question how far they can go in the competition this season. Yet, he has now been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham United, and his remaining hope of winning a trophy for Man United this season now hangs on the Premier League, FA Cup, and the Champions League, but whether he will be able to lead his team to triumph in any of these competitions remains to be seen.Ole rested most of his first-team stars in their Carabao Cup home defeat against West Ham on Wednesday night.
But in my own opinion, I think that Solskjaer would have taken the Carabao Cup very serious while also trying to Challenge for the Premier League and other big titles this season, but after been knocked out of the Carabao Cup yesterday, I think that Ole has lost his best chance of winning his first trophy for United this season given they have struggled in most of their games so far this season despite winning 4 of them.
But judging by how competitive this season's Premier League and Champions League campaigns promises to be, I doubt that they can win any of these trophies this season.
