UEFA Champions League

UCL: Teams likely to reach the Quarter finals following the first leg results of the round of 16

With the first leg of the round of 16 of the 2022/23 Champions league now in the bag, a number teams have put themselves in pole position to advance to the Quarter finals ahead of the deciding second leg next month. 17 goals were scored across eight games in the just concluded first leg ties. In view of this, check out teams likely to progress to the next round;

1- Real Madrid

Defending Champions Real Madrid had all but sealed their place in the Quarter finals following a commanding victory at Anfield. Los Blancos came from behind to edge Liverpool in a seven goal thriller. Benzema and Vinicius Jr each bagged a brace in a 5-2 win, and it's unlikely Jurgen Klopp's men can stop the Reds from marching on when both sides meet again at the Santiago Bernabeu.

2- Napoli

Serie A league leaders breezed past Europa League holders Eintracht Frankfurt with a 2-0 win courtesy of goals from in form striker Victor Osimhen, Di Lorenzo and will be confident of finishing the job in Italy.

3- Benfica

Like Napoli, Benfica took a comfortable 2-0 advantage over Club Brugge back to Portugal and can be sure of qualification if they don't get complacent in the second leg.

4- AC MILAN

Advantage AC MILAN following a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at San Siro.

5- Borrusia Dortmund

Advantage Borrusia Dortmund following a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Signal Iduna Park.

6- Inter Milan

Advantage Inter Milan thanks to a 1-0 victory over Porto at San Siro.

7- Bayern Munich

Bundesliga giants took a significant step towards reaching the last after Kingsley Coman scored to help record a 1-0 win over PSG away from home. However, there's still so much to play for as PSG will bring everything they have to try to turn the game around in Germany.

8- Manchester City

Premier league Champions Manchester City might just have the slightest of advantage after a 1-1 draw at RB Leipzig. City were pegged back in the second half after taking a halftime lead, but they can be sure of getting the better of RB Leipzig when they meet again at the Etihad Stadium.

It would take a total capitulation for Real Madrid not to reach the Quarter finals of the Champions league following a 5-2 victory at Anfield. While none of the four Premier league teams won the first leg tie, a number of them are still hopeful of turning things around in the second leg.
