Following the Covid-19 enforced break last year, France Football has now taken a huge step towards continuing with its prestigious ceremony of honouring the best performing players of 2021. The 30-man nomination list was released some hours ago and as usual, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo made the cut. Other outstanding performers that were included in the list are Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, N'golo Kante, etc, but one notable name that wasn't there is Chelsea's number one shot stopper Edouard Mendy.
After a fine display with the Blues last season, the Senegalese was honoured as UEFA's Best Goalkeeper in September, an award he rightly deserved. Many would have thought that he will also make the cut for the Ballon d'or, but rather it was PSG's new goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma who got picked.
In Donnarumma's defence, one could say he earned it following his victory with Italy at the recent Euros, but it should be noted that Mendy played more games (13) in the Champions league last season than the Italian did at the Euros (7).

For a goalkeeper who has already been recognised by UEFA as the best, it would only be natural that he gets a nomination in the Ballon d'or. In saying this, I am not implying that Mendy should win the Ballon d'or, but he ought to have at least made the 30-man list for all his exploits this year. Take nothing away from the players that made the cut, but whatever compilation process was used by France Football to arrive at this 30-man list, Edouard Mendy's name ought to have being on it and since it's not, it won't be out of place to say that the organizers didn't do right to omit him.
Why do you think Mendy missed out on the list?
