On Saturday, Chelsea played an enthrilling game against Southampton. Trevor Chalobah put the Blues in front with a close range header in the 1st half. VAR denied 2 goals from Lukaku as he was considered offside while Timo Werner also got his goal cancelled after a minor foul by Azplicueta. In the 2nd half, Southampton settled into the game and Ben Chilwell gave away a penalty, one that James Ward Prowse dispatched into the net. But not long after, he received his marching orders after a dangerous foul on Jorginho. That was all the advantage Chelsea needed as Timo Werner finally got his goal and Chilwell redeemed himself with a wonderful volley.
The match against Southampton featured some new players in his starting line-up and some from off the bench. Some impressed and others flopped. Let's look at those who deserve a place in the Starting Line-up.
1. Trevor Chalobah
He did everything right on Saturday. His goal was the beginning and his defensive outing was good. Christensen should take note and watch out.
2. Ruben Loftus Cheek
He was paired alongside Kovacic and I have to say, it was a fantastic pairing. In fact, Cheek was the most exciting player on the pitch that day. He had 4 completed dribbles, the highest of any player in the game, and 2 key passes, only bettered by the next person on this list.
3. Ben Chilwell
His first start this season was absolutely excellent. He put in a wonderful performance on Saturday. It's a wonder why Tuchel rarely uses him this season after promoting Marcos Alonso. On Saturday, he did everything well except causing a penalty. But he redeemed himself with his first goal of the season. What a goal that was.
But one player flopped seriously on the night and shouldn't be used again. That player is Ross Barkley. He lost the ball on a number of occasions and if not because Chelsea was winning, Barkley would have been put to the sword by the fans. He wasn't effective in the midfield at all. My verdict is that he should be sold.
Hopefully, Tuchel uses more of this players often. If he rotates the squad by using everybody, Chelsea will be more dangerous than ever.
