Lionel Messi is certainly among the best footballers in the history of the game. A check on his profile shows that the Argentinian currently has a market value of €45m. Close checks shows that five of his compatriots are presently more valuable than him. Who are they?
The player on top of this list is Enzo Fernández. This 22-year-old defensive midfielder has a market value of €85m which is his career highest so far. This makes him the third most valuable South American behind Vinicius Junior, Brazilian with market value of €120m and Federico Valverde (from Uruguay) who is valued at €100m. Meanwhile, Fernandez has been and influential member of Chelsea midfield since he joined the club last winter. The former Benfica star is followed by Lautaro Javier Martínez who currently plays for Inter Milan. This striker is rated at €80m Euro. His high value is commensurate with his performance for Inter Milan this season. He has netted twenty goals in Serie A and another three in UCL for the Italian giants this season.
The third most valuable Argentine football today is Cristian Romero who is the first choice centre-back at Tottenham. This 25-year-old defender joined the London club from Atalanta in August, 2022. Four months later, his Market value rose to €50m which is the current status. This follows from his solid display at the 2022 World Cup and EPL. There are two Argentines occupying the fourth position. These are Lisandro Martínez who is a centre-back at Manchester United and Julián Álvarez who plays as a striker at Manchester City. Each of them is valued at fifty million Euros. Interestingly, both of them began to play for their respective Premier League clubs this season.
As for Messi, his career-highest market value is 180 million Euros which he attained in 2018 while still at Barcelona. Despite having a low rating at the moment, it is worthy of note that no player born in 1987 is currently more valuable than the utility forward.
