Willian will soon be out of contract after only extending his previous contract still the end of the season. Chelsea's policy allows the club to offer only 12-months deal for players aged 30 and over. The idea doesn't go well with Willian who is looking for a longer deal.
Chelsea have been busy in the transfer market, they have added two new players already. Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner who arrived this summer are capable of playing on the wings but Chelsea will be strengthening key areas without having to spend big if the can keep Willian. With Pedro leaving, the arrival of Ziyech could fill that gap. On the other hand, Werner is a proven goal scorer and can operate as a wide man. Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi could have their burden lightened if Willian stays.
Elsewhere, Chelsea have been linked with wingers like Sancho and Benrahma. But keeping Willian will save the club lots of money to address other areas . Willian's form since the restart has been nothing more than superb scoring four goals and registering two assists in the league.
His work rate is an example to young players, he has more key passes than any other player, only Kovacic has completed more dribbles than him. Keeping Willian will ease the pressure on Ziyech to hit the ground running and also help young players like Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi develop their potentials.
Would it be wise to make Willian an exception to the rule by offering him a longer deal?
