Top 7 Heaviest Footballers In The Last Decade

7. George Elokobi: 210 Pounds

George Elokobi, nicknamed ‘Big George’ for his size, is a Cameroonian defender who currently plays for English National League club Leyton Orient. Although at only 5’11 tall, Elokobi stands at a whopping 210 lbs, easily making him one of the heaviest players in the world. Despite his weight, he has a very little body fat percentage as most of his body is covered in muscles, and still maintains a very visible six pack. The defender splits his training regime into three sections, which are training with the ball, training with the weights, and sprints. Sprints especially are important to him because he mostly plays as a left back, a position that requires constant running up and down the pitch.

6. Danny Shittu: 210 Pounds

Danny Shittu is a Nigerian defender who played in the Premier League with the likes of Queens Park Rangers, Watford, and Bolton. He has also represented Nigeria in the 2010 World Cup, and has 32 caps for his country. At 6’3 and 210 lbs, he was a frightening figure for forwards and used physicality to his advantage on the pitch. Shittu is now 37 years old and hasn’t played football since being released by Millwall in 2015, although he hasn’t officially announced his retirement yet.

5. Richard Dunne: 210 Pounds

A former captain of Manchester City, Richard Dunne was a one of the most recognizable defenders during his days in the Premier League due to his imposing figure. Standing at 6’2 and 210 lbs, Dunne was not only a physical player but a technical one as well. The Irishman played over 500 games for the likes of City, Aston Villa, QPR, and Everton. He also represented Ireland in the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2012, and has 80 caps for the nation. After being released from QPR in 2015, Dunne officially hanged up his boots.

4. Costel Pantilimon: 212 Pounds

Costel Pantilimon has a very different body figure compared to the previously mentioned players on this list. Unlike Shittu and Elokobi, who are extremely muscular, or Dunne who has an above average body fat perfentage, the reason why Pantilimon weights at a whopping 212 lbs is due to his height. Standing at 6’8, he is one of the tallest players in the world and could be weighting a lot more if not for his lanky figure. He was first signed by Manchester City in 2011 to become an understudy for Joe Hart, but quickly caught the media attention because of his height. The Romanian would go on to make 29 appearances for City, before leaving to become the starting keeper at Sunderland in 2014. He currently plays for La Liga outfit Deportivo La Coruna on loan from Watford, and represented Romania in the Euro 2016.

3. Nikola Zigic: 212 Pounds

At 6’8 and 212 lbs, combined with his bad boy attitude, Nikola Zigic frightened everybody on the pitch including referees. After being dubbed as a goal machine during his time in Serbia, Zigic made the jump to La Liga with Racing Santander in 2006.

He then went on to play for Valencia, where he failed to shine and was sent back on loan to Racing before being sold to then-Premier League side Birmingham City. He spent the rest of his career at the club before retiring in 2015. The Serbian also appeared in two world cups with his country.

2. Christopher Samba: 220 Pounds

Christopher Samba is best known for his time in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers, where he spent five years and made 171 appearances. At 6’4 and 220 lbs, Samba is a nightmare for every center forward and a huge threat in set pieces. Since leaving Blackburn, he’s spent time in Russia with Anzhi Makhachkala and Dynamo Moscow as well as in Greece with Panathinaikos and a brief spell in QPR. Currently, Samba plays for Aston Villa in the Championship and forms a central defensive partnership with the former Chelsea skipper John Terry.

1. Adebayo Akinfenwa: 224 Pounds

In the number one spot, we have Adebayo Akinfenwa who may be only 5’11 in height but weights 224 lbs. Nicknamed ‘The Beast’, Akinfenwa is widely known across the footballing world for his incredible physique and being ranked as the strongest footballer in the world in various editions of the FIFA video game series. In his 17 years as a footballer, he has played for 15 different clubs, with most of them being in the lower levels of English football pyramid. Currently, Akinfenwa plays his trade in League Two club Wycombe Wanderers. With his 36th birthday coming up soon, the world’s heaviest player’s playing days seem to be numbered and we’ll most likely never see another player with a physique like this. Nonetheless, if he hadn’t made it as a footballer, we’re sure he would’ve been a successful bodybuilder.
