Senegal Is Ahead of The Curve In Africa Football At The Moment

As I write this article, Senegal are currently humbling their South African counterparts in their quarter finals tie of the under 17 African cup of nations currently ungoing in Algeria. They are 4 goals up already. They scored 3 in the first half and there is every tendency they may add more before the end of this encounter.

Senegal are currently doing something right back home that has indeed transformed their football. Senegal are the current champions of Africa. They qualified for the last world cup and gave a good account of themselves in that showpiece. They won the last nations cup that was held in Cameroon. Senegal won the last Afcon after beating Egypt on penalties in the final.

The Sadio Mane led Senegalese lions defeated the pharaohs of Egypt on penalties after both sides played a goalless draw for 120 minutes in the final. They made history as it was their first time ever.

Fast forward to 2023, the lions of teranga, defeated the host, Algeria on penalties in Algiers to collect their first CHAN title. They became the only team in African history to hold the AFCON crown and the CHAN crown at the same time.

They went ahead to add the under 20 Afcon crown. They won the 2023 U20 Afcon cup of nations that was hosted in Egypt From February 19 to March 11th this year. They defeated Gambia in the Final to clinch the title. Nigeria came third while Tunisia came fourth place. They added the under 20 to their previous two crowns. That is 3 titles at different levels for one country in two years.

While I am trying to conclude, their under 17 side have added another goal to make the score line (5-0) against South Africa. They are not just scoring goals, but are playing entertaining football.

By defeating South Africa, they will be the first side to qualify for the U17 World Cup. This is indeed unique and awesome. They are currently one of the favourites to win this competition. If they do so, it will then be four titles in two years for one country. Senegal are clearly doing things right at all levels in their football at the moment. Little wonder, they have stars scattered in top teams in Europe.
