Edouard Mendy was the star of today's match because his saves in the last 15 minutes of the game helped Chelsea secure all three points, but one player that impressed at the heart of the defence was Malang Sarr and he proved that he can be a perfect replacement for Rudiger should the German defender depart the club.
Malang Sarr Making A Challenge
However, not only was it a hard fought victory, but it was also a record setting day for the Blues who became the first team from the capital to win a total of seven consecutive away London derbies in English Football League history. The Blues started the game on a front foot applying a lot of pressure to the Brentford defence, but unlike other newly promoted teams that we have seen in the past, the Bees didn't just sit back and allow Chelsea do all the pressing, they also tried to get something in the game. They came close to scoring early in the first half, but Bryan Mbeumo's strike could only hit the woodwork.
Moreso, Chelsea's constant onslaughts was rewarded after Ben Chilwell made a ferocious effort that gave his side the lead on the stroke of half-time. Although Brentford players gave everything in trying to snatch a point, Chelsea's shot stopper Edouard Mendy proved too good for the Premier League debutants. But aside from the goalkeeper, the Blues backline did their best to secure the win and Malang Sarr was particularly sublime as he defended well. His performance in the West London Derby suggest that he can replace Antonio Rudiger whose future at the club is still in doubt.
According to the statistics of today's match, the Frenchman won all four of his duels, made three interceptions which was more than any other Chelsea player, he was also relatively tidy, giving away the ball just four times. Needful to say that further statistics shows he had the most clearances (10) by a Chelsea player in a Premier League game this season, if he continues this way, there's every reason to believe that he will surely be the player to replace Rudiger should the German decide to leave Stamford Bridge.
Do you think Malang Sarr can be a suitable replacement for Antonio Rudiger?
