PL Table After Today's Games as City emerge as Champions, While Brighton qualify for Europe

In a match between champions Manchester City and Chelsea, Julian Alvarez's early goal proved to be the decisive factor, leading to a victory for the title holders.

This defeat marked the Blues' seventh loss in nine matches since Frank Lampard took over as interim boss.

Chelsea's season has been plagued by defensive lapses, and once again, a defensive error resulted in the only goal of the game at the Etihad Stadium. After Wesley Fofana gave away possession, Cole Palmer, who posed significant problems for Chelsea on the left flank, provided the assist to Alvarez, who calmly slotted the ball into the net.

While the Manchester based outfit dominated possession, Chelsea had a decent period before halftime. Raheem Sterling, facing his former club, was denied a goal by City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega after a well-timed pass from Kai Havertz. Additionally, Conor Gallagher came close to equalizing as his header from Lewis Hall's cross hit the post.

Early in the second half, City themselves struck the post when Kalvin Phillips' header, from Riyad Mahrez's free-kick, rebounded off the woodwork. The home fans momentarily believed Alvarez had scored again in the 71st minute, but VAR intervened and revealed that Mahrez had handled the ball in the buildup to the goal.
