After serious problems in today's meeting, Barcelona issued a statement confirming that they will not sign a new contract with Lionel Messi.
Sportitalia were the first to reveal the story of not only slowing down the negotiations, but also of a total collapse, with no hope of resolution.
The news spread quickly in the Spanish media as Barcelona issued an official statement tonight confirming that they will not sign a new contract with the Argentine international.
Since his contract expired on June 30, he has no more contract, but appears to have worked out the details of a new deal to cut his salary by 50%.
However, the statement accused the "Spanish League regulations" that they could not formally sign the contract.
"Given this situation, Lionel Messi will not continue with FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of both the player and the Club cannot be fulfilled.”
It is the end of an historic partnership for the player, who turned 34 in June, as he first moved to Spain for their youth academy in 2000 at the age of 13.
Messi has repeatedly thanked Barcelona for helping him make progress, including using growth hormone when he was diagnosed with a rare disease and spent 16 years in his senior team.
Messi left the Nou Camp after 778 games, scoring 672 goals and providing 305 assists.
Where do you think Lionel Messi will go next?
