Start Loftus Cheek, Double Team Maguire; What Chelsea Must Do To Beat Man U Today (Opinion)

Chelsea head into today's FA Cup semifinal showdown with Manchester United at Wembley trailing 8-1 on aggregate from their three previous meetings so far this season. Will they be fourth time lucky?

Blues boss, Frank Lampard has his work cut out today as he has the difficult but doable task task of keeping United's form men, most notably Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba at bay throughout the duration of the game.

Chelsea have to find the right balance against them today if they are to secure a 14th FA cup appearance.

Here are 3 approaches I think Frank Lampard should adopt in other to beat Manchester United today.

1. Revert to a 3-4-3 system

Chelsea's defensive frailties have been their biggest problem this season. For the past five matches, Chelsea have scored nine times but conceded on eight different occasions, an embarrassing defensive record for a Champions League side.

I think the 3-4-3 system is the best way to protect the team from United's counter attacks led by the very fast Rashford and Martial.

2. Limit space to Pogba and Fernandes

It is evident from Manchester United's recent games that limiting space to Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba seems to slow their creativity.

Also, Kurt Zouma will be very important in this game to consistently get physical with Martial and limit his role in the build up.

If Chelsea can limit their crosses into the box and their set pieces, then Chelsea can surely nick this one.

3. Devise a clear set pieces defending strategy

Chelsea's inability to properly defend set pieces has hunted them a lot of time this season and I think devising a clear strategy to defend these dead balls will be key to beating United today.

To this end, I recommend we double-team Harry Maguire at set pieces. Also Ruben Loftus Cheek should start as the team needs his height to navigate United's aerial threat in set plays.

Chelsea and Frank Lampard have their work cut out at Wembley today and with an FA Cup final against Arsenal at stake, they know they can't afford to fail this time.

What do you think about the game today?

Who do you think will edge this one?
