Arsenal signed English defender Ben White from Brighton and Hove Albion for 50 million pounds during the recently concluded summer transfer window. The defender arrived as a replacement for David Luiz who departed the club earlier.
After a difficult debut game against Brentford FC, Ben White has gone from strength to strength at Arsenal. He has made steady improvements in his game and his qualities especially his passing have been quite breathtaking.
Preparing to face a Crystal Palace team led by Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira at the Emirates Stadium on Monday, Ben White spoke about himself and revealed that he didn't know much about Patrick Vieira.
He said, "I didn't ever watch football when I was younger. I still don't now. I just loved the game, I was always playing it, never watching. So I don't know much about the older generations, but I know Vieira was a good player. But I don't know the details".
Being a professional footballer, fans found it strange that Ben White didn't really watch football, and criticized him because it is commonly believed that if one loves and plays football then such a person must watch the game.
But I think Ben White should not be criticized for saying he didn't really know much about Patrick Vieira and here are two reasons why.
1. Ben White was born on the 8th of October 1997 which makes him 24 years old. Meanwhile, Patrick Vieira left Arsenal in 2005 which means Ben White was about 8 years old when the Frenchman left the Gunners.
So it isn't really a bad thing for an eight-year-old to know little or nothing about a footballer who played at that time.
2. Ben White's mother revealed that he had immune system problems when he was a kid. She also said he had about six to seven different infections, so if the English defender was always at the hospital for his health, I think it isn't a bad thing if he didn't know about footballers then.
For these reasons, I think Ben White should not be criticized for saying he didn't really know about Patrick Vieira.
