Opinion: Why Chelsea defenders are scoring more goals this season than usual.

Football is a game that had posed a series of questions to many people as to why some things are just the way they are in it. For instance, every position in a football game has its peculiarities. If you are a striker, it is expected that you score loads of goals and if you are a defender, you are expected to help shut out opposition attack.

However, in some cases, defenders or a team's defense tend to score more goals than some strikers or attacks of other teams. One team who has shows that recently is Chelsea football club. The blues have had almost all their defenders on the scoresheet in all competitions this season, with Andreas Christensen strike against Malmö seeing him join the long list of Chelsea defenders to have scoring at least a goal this season. In an attempt to answer some questions that might be in the mind of some people, we will look at some major reasons why those defenders have been more productive at the other end of the pitch this season.

The likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Marcos Alonso, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Reece James, Antonio Rudiger, among others have found the back of the net for Chelsea, something which is not often seen among defenders in any club around the world. While many people might be wondering what could have been the logic behind this goal scoring exploits for the blues' defenders, we provide two possible reasons below.

1. Smartness at Set pieces.

This season, Chelsea seems to have found a way of scoring from set piece situations, something they have been struggling to do since the days of Garry Cahill, John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic. The likes of Thiago Silva, Chalobah and Christensen have all scored from set piece situations.

2. Full backs being more intent on attack than before.

Over the past few months, Thomas Tuchel has been trying to get his team to understand how he wants his side to play in his preferred 3-4-3 formation. This season, his full-backs seems to have perfectly understood how their manager wants them to play, as they have all contributed significantly at the other end of the pitch.

While there could be many more reasons why the Chelsea defenders are scoring more goals this season, we certainly believe that the two points mentioned above are part of the major reasons why there more goals among the blues' defenders than usual.
