An American club, American Monarch, made history over the weekend when they paraded the youngest ever player in American league history, Axel Kei, a 13-year-old Ivorian. It's just very nice when amazing stories like this make the news. At least, it shows that when players are good enough, they are old enough and age is not a barrier in football.
The only doubt that has been raised since this kid made history is his age authenticity. Many people already labelled him an age cheat.Obviously, Axel doesn't look like the regular 13-year-old. He looks almost double his age, but kids don't grow the same way and there could be rare cases when it comes to child growth. Axel may just be one of those rare cases.
The fact that he was born in Ivory Coast didn't help, but cast more doubt on how true his age is because the world literally see Africans and South Americans as the biggest culprits when it comes to age falsification.
Romelu Lukaku is one other player who also got the age cheat label due to his rapid growth. His case is not so different from Axel's. At thirteen, he looked double his real age too, but Lukaku was born in Belgium, though his parents are from DR Congo. But the Belgian has an authentic birth certificate to back himself up.
Kurt Zouma is another player who looked way older than his real age. Zouma at twenty was just so unbelievable. His physique was so intimidating and he looked really matured, but time is now bearing him witness because at 25 he still looks at his peak and not on the decline.
The truth about age falsification is that it has a way of telling on the cheat's career. Age cheats don't last in football. The moment their peers are reaching their peak around age 25, they are already at the twilight of their career and the end is in sight. They end up fading away before 30.
Lukaku is now 28 and is still waxing it strong, which is a testimony to the fact that he was really thirteen then. Concerning Axel, we'll see how far he goes and only time will tell. We wish him a successful career ahead of and we hope to see him at the top.
