Lionel Messi has not been in good form since he joined Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window. Lionel Messi is yet to register a goal for his new club after making three appearances for PSG and is already classified by critics as a flop of the season.
Lionel Messi was lost and totally a shadow of himself in the Champions League opening fixture against Club Brugge and even had a lot disastrous performance in the last weekend Ligue One game against Lyon.
His lackadaisical and shambolic performance was too much for coach Mauricio Pochettino to bear and did the unthinkable, something that has not been done to Messi throughout his stay at Barcelona by substituting Messi in the second half.
Normally a player of the calibre of Messi is not substituted in matches unless they are injured or personally demand to be changed. However, Pochettino thought Messi was having a good match or not playing to his instructions hence why he replaced him in the 76th minute for Mauro Icardi.
Lionel Messi's substitution put Pochettino on the hot seat as Messi fans blasted him on social media but were disappointed when Icardi scored the winning goal against Lyon, making the substitution a perfect decision.
Although, Lionel Messi didn't make the substitution in good fate as he refused to shake Pochettino hand and was caught on camera looking visibly disgusted by the whole incident and didn't care to celebrate PSG winning goal.
Time for Pochettino to make a tough decision:
Messi may be the greatest footballer of all time but no player is bigger than the club and even though Messi was somehow a big influence at Barcelona, he may not enjoy the same privilege at Paris Saint-Germain.
Pochettino is the head coach, he is responsible for all the players and his decision is final, hence why he should make decisions favourable to the team even though the decision means dropping Messi on the bench. Pochettino should not be afraid of criticism and should relegate Lionel Messi to the bench till the next three matches until the Argentine rediscover his form.
Note: This doesn't mean Messi should not play again for PSG but should be kept on the bench where he will watch and understand how PSG plays and then introduce into the second half to make the difference.
