When you run in a sprint race, speed is of great importance, when you run in marathon perseverance is the key. Perseverance is the ability to hold on when strength is failing, it is the resilience required when weakness is eminent, perseverance does not mean you will not be weak it just means you continue despite your weakness. The journey of faith is like a marathon race, there is great need to persevere and also to lay aside every weight (sin) that will make the journey burdensome.
Before a man can successfully persevere he must have an anchor to which he is holding unto. Consider Jesus as an example of a man that persevered in the journey of faith. He endured everything by looking ahead to the prize before Him. A continuous gaze at the prize can be a very good motivation for perseverance; perseverance is a test of endurance. When the promise seems delaying, you must learn to persevere, when the race seems tough, you need to persevere, when the promise of help seems lingering, learn perseverance.
Perseverance means enduring the pain, difficulty, uneasiness, and all unpalatable experiences, perseverance means coping with bad experiences because you are hoping in good experiences. Since Jesus perseveres, you have no choice than to learn it. Bishop Thomas Dexter Jakes quoted “When the goal in front of you becomes more powerful than the obstacle behind you, you will always win.” What is the goal that is ahead of you? For Jesus it was the joy that was set before him, for Joseph it was his dreams. When you can’t see anything more than your difficulty, you won’t overcome it. Look to the promises of God and His faithfulness, this forms the basis for your joy as you run the Christian race.
