UEFA Champions League

The 11 players that could make the FIFA team of the year 2021

French news magazine France Football has released a 30-man shortlist for the 2021 Ballon d'Or award. Some of the players that made that list could make the FIFA team of the year 2021 as they are the 30 best players in the world at the moment. As a result, from among them, we have selected the best performers in each position and arranged them in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

1) Goalkeeper - Gianluigi Donnarumma - Paris Saint-Germain

Donnarumma is the only goalkeeper that made the list. He kept 14 clean sheets for AC Milan in the Seria A last season and 3 in the UEFA Europa League in which they were eliminated in the round of 16. However, he was vital for Italy winning the Euro 2020 tournament and was named player of the tournament after the final. In 2021, he kept 10 clean sheets in 16 games for his national team. He is currently at Paris Saint-Germain after leaving AC Milan last summer.

2) Right back: Cesar Azpilicueta - Chelsea

It's been a wonderful year for the Chelsea captain as he won the Champions League, Super Cup, got to the semi-final of the Euro 2020 tournament with Spain and is now in the UEFA Nations League final. His versatility in the defensive positions has been helpful as he sometimes plays as a center-back for his club.

3) Center-back: Ruben Dias - Manchester City

The UEFA defender of the year. The Portuguese defender turned Manchester City's season around as they were struggling defensively before he was signed about a year ago. He came in and became the leader they so desperately needed since Vincent Kompany left the club and his form ensured they won the League Cup and the Premier League titles. He also helped his team get to the Champions League final but unfortunately, they couldn't win that one. He has carried that form into the new season.

4) Center-back: Leonardo Bonucci - Juventus

Bonucci is another player that made the list because of his performance for his national team. The 34-year-old was a rock at the back for Italy in Euro 2020 tournament as attackers rarely got past him.

5) Left-back: Oleksandr Zinchenko - Manchester City

No left-back was named in the 30-man Ballon d'Or list. However, that is not a problem as we have picked Zinchenko who was outstanding for Manchester City last season. His performance was also crucial in Ukraine reaching the quarter-final of the Euro 2020 tournament. Has not played much this season as a result of an injury.

6) Defensive midfielder: N'Golo Kante - Chelsea

Kante was deservedly named the UEFA best midfielder after playing a vital role in the Chelsea team that won the Champions League last season. He has since added the Super Cup to the trophies he had won. He is not just on the 30-man shortlist, he is one of the favourites for the prestigious award.

7) Central midfield: Jorginho - Chelsea

Jorginho is the current UEFA player of the year and there is a big possibility he could win this year's Ballon d'Or award as he was vital for both club and country. His ability to control the tempo of the game when under pressure ensured Chelsea and Italy were mostly in control till they won their respective trophies. He was the reason Italy played attacking football in the Euro tournament.

8) Right-wing forward: Riyad Mahrez - Manchester City

Mahrez and Mohamed Salah are the only two African players on the list but the Algerian might likely be the one that gets a place in the team of the Year. Last season Mahrez made Manchester City's right-wing his and was almost unstoppable as he scored 14 goals and provided 9 assists in all competitions. This season he already has 4 goals and 2 assists.

9) Attacking midfield: Kevin De Bruyne - Manchester City

De Bruyne had double figures in goals and assists last season. Although he did not win the best midfielder of the year award he is regarded as the best playmaker in the world. It was unfortunate he had to be substituted in the Champions League final as he might have made a difference.

10) Left-wing forward: Lionel Messi - Paris Saint-Germain

Messi was outstanding at Barcelona last season. He didn't win the big club trophies but his 38 goals and 14 assists in all competitions were proof of how good he was. He was also named player of the tournament after he helped Argentina win the Copa America in July.

11) Striker: Robert Lewandowski - Bayern Munich

The winner of the European golden shoe in the 2020/21 season. Lewandowski is so good that it's easy to forget that he is 33 years old. He had 48 goals and 9 assists last season and has already scored 13 in all competitions this season. Would have been the current holder of the Ballon d'Or award if it was awarded last year.
