Roma's Goalless Draw With Hellas Verona Changed To 3:0 In Favour Of Verona Because Of Roma's Mistake

Italian Serie A side AS Roma have been penalized with a 3:0 defeat following an registration error noticed in the teams goalless draw with Hellas Verona on Saturday.

The Giallorossi mistakenly listed 23-year-old Guinea international Amadou Diawara in the under-22 section, rather than the 25-man squad list for senior players.

Diawara lasted for 89 minutes in the goalless affair before being withdrawn.

According to Sky Sports Italia, Roma were alerted to the problem by automatic software set up by the league but when they contacted Serie A they were told it was a technical error.

Roma are expected to appeal the ruling on the grounds that the mistake was done without any intention to violate the rules as Paulo Fonseca still had spaces in his 25-man squad list.

It might interest you to know that this is not the first time that Serie A has handed down defeat to a team for formal errors.

In 2016, Sassoulo lost 0-3 to Pescara for fielding Antonino Ragusa, who was not in their official player list.
