Opinion: Reasons why Chelsea’s Jorginho deserves to win Ballon d’Or

Jorginho was among the 30 nominees for the Ballon d’Or announced last week, but the Chelsea midfielder should be named the best player of 2021 for his performances for both club and country. Apart from a few games, he never missed a start and never played less throughout the year for Chelsea and Italy.

A shortlist of 30 players was released last week for the award. And since Jorginho was essential for both Thomas Tuchel and Roberto Mancini in their title winning season, he ought to be named the best player in Europe.

Although, he rarely score goals and provide assist. Of course, the outcome of a football match is ultimately determined by whose team scores the most goals.

However, he was pivotal to Chelsea winning Champions League. In addition to starting 12 out of Chelsea’s 13 matches en route to winning the club’s second title in Europe’s premier club competition, Jorginho also captained the side twice along the way. Due to his suspension in the Round of 16 return leg against Atletico Madrid, the Italian only made it 12 out of 13 matches played for the Stamford Bridge side.

Also, he is indespensable for the Italy national team during the Euro 2020. Jorginho was the outfield player with the most minutes on the pitch in the competition once again, starting all seven of Italy's matches and only being replaced after 75 minutes against Wales in the meaningless final group stage match. Throughout the tournament, the former Hellas Verona midfielder had a spectacular 93 percent passing accuracy and completed 497 passes, the most of any player and second only to Spain's Laporte.

In sum, Jorginho was the brain behind the build-up play, which inevitably leads to assists and goals by finding the spaces and movements of his teammates for both club and country. Hence, the Chelsea midfielder serves as a point of reference for his colleagues and deserves to win the Ballon d’Or award for year 2021.
