Football being the game involving 2 teams playing to achieve a goal, has become one of the most popular and loved games in the whole world.
In today's article, we shall remember some of our Nigerians footballers who died doing what they do best, these players died while playing for their beloved country.
1. Sam Okwaraji
Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji was a great well known Nigerian footballer who studied Law and had his masters in International law from the Pontifical Lateran University of Rome, but despite him being a qualified lawyer he chose to be a footballer so as to save his beloved country Nigeria.
Sam Okwaraji was born on the 19th of May 1964 in Orlu and died of heart failure while playing as a midfielder during a world cup qualifier against Angola, in Lagos State, Nigeria, on the 12th of August 1989, as his middle name goes Sochukwuma which means "Only God Knows".
2. Amir Angwe
Amir Angwe was a well known great Nigerian International footballer he also played for Julius Berger, Amir Angwe died of heart attack while playing as a forward in an African Cup Winners' Cup against Mozambique side Maxaquene, on the 29th of October 1995.
3. Henry Chinonso Ihelewere
Chinonso Ihelewere Henry was a well known great Nigerian-born Romanian footballer, he was born on the 8th of July 1991 and died while playing as a Forward for CS Delta Tulcea against the FC Baloteṣti in Romania, according to reports he collapsed after playing for 15 minutes but died after failed attempts of resuscitation on the 5th of August 2012.
4. Bob Elejiko
Bobsam Elejiko was a well known great Nigerian footballer, who was best known as Bob Elejiko, he was born on the 18th of August 1981 in Lagos State, Nigeria, and died while playing for Belgian side Merksem S.C. as a defender during a football match on the 13th of November 2011 in Merkesem, Antwerp, Belgium.
5. Emmanuel Ogoli
Emmanuel Ogoli was a great Nigerian footballer, who played as a Left Back for the Bayelsa United and the Ocean Boys, he was born in the year 1989 and collapsed on the pitch while playing on the 12th of December 2010 in Yenagoa.
6. Endurance Idahor
Endurance Idahor was a great well known Nigerian footballer, who played as a forward for Sudanese Club Al-Merreikh, he was born on the 4th of August 1984 in Edo and he collapsed during a league game and later died on his way to the hospital on the 6th of March 2010 in Omdurman, Sudan
7. David Oniya
David Faramola Oniya was a Nigerian great footballer, who played as a defender for Malaysia Premier League club known as T-Team, he was born on the 5th of June 1985 in Lagos and died during a football match on the 13th of June 2015 in Kota, Bharu, Malaysia, he died few days after his birthday day.
