Arsenal are the most successful club at Wembley, with 13 trophies and the last coming as far back as 2017. Winning the FA Cup would do Arsenal a great deal especially for their hopes in playing at European competitions next season.
Manchester City are the most recent champions of the FA Cup, and have won it for 6 times only. The 'Cityzens' would be looking to win the FA Cup for this year so they can boast of a silverware, after failing to keep the league title chase with Liverpool.
Prior to the match, Arsenal fans were surprised to see their manager include the likes of David Luiz and Mustafi (both error prone players) and his decision to keep Rob Holding who performed incredulously against Sadio Mane on Wednesday, on bench. Manchester City fans were however, happy yo see their trio of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez make the starting line-up and they expressed their confidence in overcoming Arsenal.
The match begun in favour of Manchester City, as the first 10 minutes of play saw them dominate the game with 83% of ball possession, while Arsenal settled for 13%. This domination led to some weird creeping feeling in the gunners side, as they let fear set in and tried to dominate the ball as well. In the 10th minute, as Arsenal were playing from the back in other to build possession, Mustafi tried to dribble Sterling in his box, of course he was unsuccessful and lost the ball to Sterling who was about to take a shot when David Luiz blocked and came to the rescue of Arsenal.
Arsenal decided to create some attacking fluidity of their own in the 19th minute, and they dominated the right flank well with Bellerin and Pepe combining passes that released Pepe and created a chance for the Ivorian to send a cross over Walker to Pierre Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabonese International did not fail to show his class as he directed the cross to the far right bottom of the net, even from a tight angle giving Arsenal the 1-0 lead.
Arsenal almost got another in the 31st minute when Lacazette intercepted a pass from Ederson and sent it to Aubameyang the goalie made a good cover over the striker and he had no other choice but to release it for Pepe who didn't have enough speed to score the empty net as Walker cleared the ball for Manchester City. Arsenal had earlier made a mistake with Bellerin playing a pass into his box, Jesus intercepted and sent a pass to Kevin De Bruyne whose shot was blocked by Xhaka.
Arsenal kept their 1-0 lead well into the halftime and returned with intention to win the fixture in the the second half as they soaked up all of Manchester City's press and scored a second in the 75th minute when they counter attacked. The ball started with Tierney, who sent his pass to Pepe who dribbled and passed back. Tierney them sent a through ball, as a cross for Aubameyang who didn't fail to finish exquisitely through the legs of Ederson. Classic win from the gunners, they are 2-0 ahead in a match that looked almost impossible for them to surmount.Mikel Arteta would be so pleased with the result he had managed to obtain at Wembley today, as he is just one step closer to winning his first silverware for his club in his first half season as the manager of the gunners. Also winning the FA Cup guarantees Arsenal a place at the Europa League next season and that ticket they are very much willing to obtain. A fantastic performance from the boys, and you couldn't be any prouder.
