I knew that at a certain stage, Martinez was formerly adored by Arsenal fans, particularly following his stunning saves that helped Arsenal win the FA Cup for the 14th time in their history. However, it appears as though the relationship between Arsenal fans and Emiliano Martinez, whom they once regarded as a hero, has soured. How do we know this?
On Friday, while the match between Arsenal and Aston Villa was ongoing, there were chants heard from Arsenal fans who ridiculed the Aston Villa goal-keeper and made comparisons between Martinez and Arsenal's current first-choice goal-keeper, Aaron Ramsdale.
The fans were heard singing: "He is better than you (Martinez), he is better than you. Aaron Ramsdale is better than you..."
To me, the chants directed at Emiliano Martinez are disrespectful. Comparing him to Aaron Ramsdale, who had no history with Arsenal, is not a good idea in my opinion, and it is disrespectful of what Martinez accomplished with Arsenal.
I also did a little research to see what went wrong between Martinez and Arsenal and realised that nothing really much aside from the fact that he wanted the number one spot, considering he had performed and merited it. But Leno's current form at Arsenal at that point in time denied him that privilege.
I also realised that Emiliano Martinez was at Arsenal for a very long period of time. From 2012-2020, which is like a total of 8 years. That means for eight years he served Arsenal, and for those eight years, he was never deemed fit for first team action, and yet he kept quiet, patiently waiting for his opportunity. And when the time arrived for him, he was, however, denied. So it is only natural for him to want first team action elsewhere, having served Arsenal for such a long time. What I do not expect is the fans to taunt and ridicule him for wanting first-team action.
In my opinion, what Arsenal fans did was wrong. Emiliano Martinez does not deserve the disrespectful taunting he received on Friday. Instead, he deserves to be treated as a hero.
