Three African Stars Who Came Close To Winning The Biggest Individual Award In Football

Africa has produced so many great football players over the past three decades. The likes of Wilfred Ndidi and Mohamed Salah are currently playing well in the English Premier League. Players like Didier Drogba and Peter Odemwingie have also done well in Europe. However, there is only one African football player who has won the Ballon d'Or award. His name is George Weah. It should be said that the Ballon d'Or is the biggest individual award in football. Below are three African players who came close to winning the Ballon d'Or award.

1. Samuel Eto'o

The former Barcelona star played for so many big clubs around Europe. He even played for Chelsea and Everton in the English Premier League. It should also be said that Samuel Eto'o scored so many goals in 2009. He even came close to winning the Ballon d'Or that year. However, the award was given to Lionel Messi.

2. Mohamed Salah

He has been a revelation since he moved to Liverpool under the management of Jurgen Klopp. Mohamed Salah played a crucial role when Liverpool won the UEFA Champions League title in 2019. Some pundits are of the opinion that he should have won the Ballon d'Or award that year. However, he lost the award to Lionel Messi.

3. Didier Drogba

The former Chelsea star finished fourth in the 2007 Ballon d'Or ranking. This means that he had a very good opportunity of winning the highly coveted award. However, he was beaten to the award by Kaka.
