Chelsea in transfer fight to seal Nicolas Tagliafico in £24.5m deal from Ajax as Chilwell back-up

Chelsea in transfer fight to seal Nicolas Tagliafico in £24.5m deal for Ajax as Lampard eyes move as Chilwell back-up

The Argentina left-back is on Chelsea's shortlist as a back-up option in case their top target, the Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell proves too expensive

Tagliafico made the move to Ajax for a fee of £4 million in January 2018 and made his professional debut for the club during a 2−0 home win against Feyenoord on 21 January 2018 in the Klassieker .

He has 25 caps, helped Ajax to the top of the Eredivisie before the Dutch campaign was abandoned because of Covid-19.

The 27-year-old has a verbal agreement with Ajax that he can leave for £24.5m this summer having accepted last year to stay another season.

The defender has been in Atletico Madrid radar 12 months ago and are understood to be keen on signing him in the upcoming window.

But with the impact of the coronavirus biting, boss Diego Simeone is likely to have to sell before he can buy.

The blues boss Frank Lampard is desperate to get a left-back when the transfer market opens.

He is unconvinced by both Marcos Alonso and Emerson, who has been linked with a move back to Italy with Inter Milan.

Instead, Lampard has often played the right-footed Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back this season.
