Was Antoine Griezmann that bad at Barcelona?

Part of Barcelona squad reacted with joy over the departure of Antoine Griezmann from the Camp Nou which spark up questions if the French international was abysmal in the Barca shirt. According to Diario AS, some of the players claimed he was never part of the core group of players at the club and they are glad he's gone.

The Frenchman rejoined Athletico Madrid this summer on a one-year loan with an option to be extended for another year, and with an obligation to buy for a reported fee of €40m to be activated in 2023, and according to Diario Sport, some of his former teammates aren't disappointed with his departure. In fact, they are happy the 30-year-old has left the club and hope he sign on with his new club permanently.

Griezmann's two-year stay with the Blaugrana didn't turn out as expected as he managed to score 35 goals and provided 16 assists in 102 appearances across all competitions. Since joining from the Wanda Metropolitano in 2019, he's had a horrible time at the Camp Nou. Previously, supporters of the club have called out on him for so many missed chances in front of goal.

Also, the World Cup winner never managed to find his place at the club and some months ago, complained of being played out of position. During an interview with Diario AS, following a match in which he was heavily criticized, he told reporters that if Barcelona want the best from him, they should play him in his natural position which is the supporting striker role. Ernesto Valverde, Quique Setien and Ronald Koeman have all played him out of position according to the Frenchman.

Furthermore, he felt that he was always in the shadow of legendary Lionel Messi. He felt he wasn't treated fairly and that everybody was treating Messi as god. He said he knew Messi was a great player. He had history with the club and he thinks he the club’s greatest player of all time. However, they are all professionals and as such, should be treated equally.

Therefore, since he is only behind Thierry Henry (49 goals) on the all time list of French goalscorer for Barcelona, Antoine couldn't be as bad as his former teammates and supporters think of him. Although, he couldn't replicate his Athletico Madrid form and didn't justify the amount of money the Blaugrana paid to land him.
